Configuration Information

For attaching to SUCCESS LAN

Connections onto the primary segment of the LAN at Salina will be via twisted pair ethernet cable (10BaseT). All ethernet LAN connections are expected to be within office and other work space located in the hangar assigned to the mission at the Salina airport. We will provide twisted pair ethernet cabling extending from our router and network concentrator to each assigned work area where network devices are expected to be operating. Our ethernet cable will end at the user network device in a standard RJ45 jack male connector with standard 10baseT signals on pins 1, 2, 3, & 6 of the connector. Participants bringing computers and other devices to be connected to the primary LAN segment are responsible for providing the necessary hardware to mate their equipment with the RJ45 twisted pair ethernet connector, e.g. an ethernet interface for each device, and an internal or external ethernet transceiver with 10BaseT RJ45 female connector.

Participants are also responsible for providing, configuring, and maintaining networking software that will safely and reasonably communicate over the LAN using standard TCP/IP protocols. Configuration of this software will usually include defining the assigned IP address for the device, symbolic hostname for the device, gateway IP address for routing onto the Internet via our router, name server IP address, broadcast address, and network mask. Please be ready to take the assigned values for these network parameters and use them to properly configure your network device's software for operation at Salina.

Ames will provide optional hostname to IP address translation via domain name service (DNS) for machines known to be operating on the Salina LAN. Or we may operate a name server on the local Salina LAN for LAN hostname lookups. Alternatively, machines on the LAN can maintain their own static host tables containing symbolic hostname and IP address pairs. We will be interfacing with the NASA Science Internet Project Office and Kansas State University to provide as reliable WAN support as is possible via the T1 lines routing into and out from the airport at Salina.
