SOLVE Instrument Investigators, To assist with your planning for SOLVE and for us to ensure your needs are met, the project office needs to collect some vital information. If you would like our assistance on the following issues you must reply NLT Monday, July 19th. If we do not hear from you by this date, we will assume that you will be responsible for your own gases and cryogen needs, including shipments. The project office will arrange to have military aircraft ferry project, aircraft, and investigator equipment to Kiruna. Planned periods for these transports are the end of October and mid January. Toxic and flammable gases will not be allowed on these aircraft and combinations of other types may not be allowed together. Although there is not a local gas company in Kiruna, there is one in Lulea who will carry most all types (with certain exceptions of calibration gases) and will deliver on a weekly basis. We need to collect information on all gases needed for your instruments. Please furnish a list of those gases and cryogens you would like the project office to purchase in Kiruna and those you would like to ship via the military transport aircraft. For your planning purposes, you can expect to have approximately 6-7 sorties per deployment on the DC-8 and 7-8 sorties per on the ER-2, plus transits. The second item you should be aware of concerns phone calls from Kiruna. Calls are very expensive from Sweden to the States. Although all the labs will have phones, they will be limited to local calls only. It's imperative that all teams get a calling card to make any calls to their home institution or other places in the States or their home country. Most all major calling card companies have a Sweden toll-free number that you can call. Make sure you find out what this number is prior to leaving for Kiruna. Using this method will also avoid any surcharge the hotel normally charges for long distance calls. The last item (in this email at least) is about electrical power. Power supplied in the hangar includes: 380V 3-Phase (50Hz), and 220v 3-Phase (50Hz), in addition to the normal wall outlet which is 220v (50Hz). There will be no 110v 60Hz power available in the hangar or labs and if any teams are restricted by this, it is their responsibility to supply their own converters. The project office will supply 110v 400Hz for the instruments that inform us of that need. Lab spaces within the hangar are going to be assigned in the very near future and those who need special power requirements will need to reply to this email by the due date or accept the responsibility for their own power. For any items that require 110v but can operate on 50Hz, small transformers can purchased at any local electrical store. Converters for the actual plugs will be supplied by the project office. Please do not hesitate in responding to this email. Thank you for your time and your future response
