POLARIS PROJECT OFFICE EMAIL ARCHIVE FOR 970327

Dear POLARIS Colleague,

As most of you know, we had a POLARIS telecon yesterday, 26 March, to discuss the
recent findings of dramatic ozone losses in the Arctic polar vortex over the last few weeks.
The majority of the instrument and theory PIUs participated. Paul Newman laid out the
science background. The vortex is extremely strong (high zonal mean wind speed) and
cold. Temperatures are still below the Type I PSC limit as of 970326. Total ozone is
setting record low values to less than 225DU.

We made the decision to change the 1st POLARIS deployment schedule to react to these
new findings. We will bypass the April Hawaii segment altogether and transit to Fairbanks
directly from Ames on 24 April. The overall dates for integration and test flights will
remain the same, as will the latest return date from Fairbanks (15 May). To obtain measurements as far south as possible in this time period, we will make the 3rd test flight from Ames, on 22 April, a survey flight to the south.

Please note that we have set up an Remail archiveS heading on the POLARIS web page which contains all of the email notices sent to the POLARIS distribution for your reference.

The deployment 1 schedule is as follows:

9 April ER-2 available for integration
	15 April	1st test flight
	18 April	2nd test flight
22 April	3rd test flight (8-hour survey flight south)
	23 April	Pack/Load
	24 April	Transit to FAIRBANKS
	26 April	Flight Ready Fairbanks
13 May	Last Flight Opportunity, Fairbanks
	14 May	Pack/Load
	15 May	Commercial return home

Logistical issues:
Kathy Wolfe has contacted the hotels in Fairbanks and moved our room blocks.
**
** HOWEVER, YOU MUST MAKE YOUR OWN INDIVIDUAL RESERVATION
** CHANGES (FOR BOTH THE APRIL/MAY AND SEPTEMBER DEPLOYMENTS).
** (Recall that changes to the September deployment were made some time ago).
**

The project office will work individually with those groups that will need help in sending
materials and equipment to Fairbanks. Especially those groups, for example, that planned
to send equipment from Ames to Fairbanks while the ER-2 was to be in transit through
Hawaii. It appears that we will have to put some of the critical equipment on the C-141 and
send other equipment commercially early in the week of 21 April to have it arrive by the
24th. If you will need such assistance, please contact Quincy Allison via email and provide
him with details of your requirements (i.e., types and amounts of material and equipment to
send - numbers and weights of boxes, special handling for gas cylinders, etc.). QuincyUs
email is: qallison@mail.arc.nasa.gov
