Dear POLARIS Colleague,

While it might seem that the 1997 Photochemistry of Ozone Loss in the Arctic Region In Summer (POLARIS) aircraft campaign is a long way off, to quote a member of the science team, objects on the calendar are closer than they appear. I have been working to secure a hotel room block in Fairbanks for the three deployment periods, based on the calendar dated 960724 which you should have received by now. Making these reservations has been particularly difficult, especially for the June/July deployment, as that period is right in the middle of high tourist season and the hotels are reticent to set aside space that can easily be occupied by the many tour groups that travel to Fairbanks in the summer. Because of this hesitation, and the likelihood that there will be no rooms available as the deployment approaches, I am recommending that you make your reservations as soon as possible.

The hotels that have been selected for the POLARIS teams are:

Both hotels are in close proximity to Fort Wainwright and offer suite accommodations with in-room kitchens and on-site laundry facilities. Rooms are available at both the Sophie Station Hotel and the Wedgewood Resort for the April/May and September deployments. The number of rooms at Sophie Station is limited (ten per deployment), and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The entire June/July block is at Wedgewood. Again, because of the interest by the tour groups (and their ability to pay rates above per diem), the sooner you make your reservations the better.

You will need to guarantee your reservations with a credit card or by sending a deposit equal to the first night's stay. Reservations must be canceled 48 hours prior to the scheduled arrival in order to avoid paying a one-night penalty charge.

Please call 1.800.528.1442 or 907.452.1442 for reservations at either location. It is extremely important that all science team members be identified with the group, so please use these numbers only when calling to reserve a room (i.e., do not call the front desk at Sophie Station).

The hotel management will make a determination in January as to the adequacy of the room block, so please make your reservations by 20 January if at all possible, particularly for the June/July deployment.
