Dear TRMM/Kwajex participants:
As I'm sure most of you know already, there are very few motorized
vehicles on Kwajalein for personal transportation. The primary means of
transportation for most of us will be a bicycle. Although there will be a
few vehicles available for our use, these will be reserved for special
needs such as movement of heavy items and/or for those who cannot, for
health reasons, travel by bike.
The TRMM project has purchased 100 bicycles, locks, and lights. Although
our total # of TRMM participants that you see on the roster page is large,
we do not expect there to be more than 100 TRMM people on the island at one
time.
There are island taxis which are available for $1 per ride; this is
another option for local travel. However, the most efficient mode of travel
will be by bicycle.
When you arrive on Kwajalein, you may check out a bicycle at the
TRMM/Kwajex project office at Bldg. 1009. You will be able to check out a
bike for the entire duration of your stay, and turn it in when you leave.
It will be your responsibility to keep it locked as necessary.
We wanted to be sure that everyone who will be visiting Kwajalein for
Kwajex is aware of the situation on local transportation. Even though
Kwajalein is flat terrain, biking there can be a challenge due the wind.
Pedaling into the wind is like pedaling uphill and can be difficult. Those
of you who are not accustomed to exercise may want to dust off your bikes
and go out riding in the next few weeks, as conditioning for Kwajex. Or,
try out that lifcycle at the gym?
