KWAJEX BULLETIN #1

6/11/99

Hello KWAJEX Folks,

As some of you know there will not be any wide area network (WAN)
connectivity for KWAJEX participants at Kwajalein. We have been told
that there are only 36 telephone lines servicing KMR, and we have been
asked to use them sparingly and preferably only between midnight and
0600. So, communications are not as convenient as any of us would like.

In an effort to have the appearance of Internet connectivity and
email, the Earth Science Projects Office (ESPO) at NASA Ames Research
Center (ARC) will build a UTP 10BASE-T (ethernet) local area network
(LAN) using cat V cable with RJ45 connectors. It will not be
connected to the WAN. The ESPO will also provide hostname to IP
address resolution, domain name service (DNS), and email via a POP3
server on the KWAJEX LAN.

Anyone having Internet connectivity outside of the KWAJEX LAN will be
able to email to any host on our LAN, and all hosts on our KWAJEX LAN
will be able to email to other hosts anywhere. Since we have no WAN
connectivity, email will be transferred into and out of our LAN at
least twice a day, courtesy of KMR.

Email will be delivered to each POP account on the server or to your
properly configured transfer agent (sendmail for UNIX boxes). POP
account users are responsible for providing their own user agent
(i.e. Netscape, Eudora, Outlook, etc.). Anyone having a Mac or PC
will need to have a POP account if they want to participate in our
email schema.

Everyone will be notified by e-mail about the information you will need to
configure your equipment for the KWAJEX LAN at Kwajalein, MI.
( e.g. IP address, domain name, broadcast, gateway, and subnetmask, etc. ).

All participants connecting to the LAN are responsible for providing,
configuring, and maintaining ethernet hardware and software which
will safely communicate on our LAN via TCP/IP protocols.

We need the following information from each each of you:

For each IP addressable machine (computer, printer, instrument):

     1) The name of the person using the machine.
     2) Group and center/company affiliation.
     3) Hostname.
     4) Indicate if POP3 account is needed.
     5) CPU/architecture type ( eg. "MAC G3", "Pentiun II", "ULTRA2/sparc.sun4u", etc. ).
     6) Operating system ( eg. "WIN98/NT", "MacOS9.7", "IRIX", "SUNOS?/SOLARIS"etc.).

Please have one person from each group e-mail the above information
as completely as possible and as soon as possible, to Joe Goosby, at the
address given below.

Thanks very much for your cooperation.
