Citation Flight Notes July 28, 2002 Crew: Le Hardy, Sprosty, Askelson, Twohy, DeMott 193833: Takeoff 194536: NPOL Lidar is on. 195312: Targeting first cell. Going to skirt cell while rising to 29,000 ft (hereafter 290 ft). 195440: In cloud. Went through at ~-24 deg C. 195517: HVPS looks good. 195955: NPOL Lidar off. 200042: Reached 290 ft. 200355: Entering cloud. King at -0.044. 200645: Updraft then donwdraft. Both about 5 m/s. Then, another 5 m/s updraft and then another downdraft. 200823: Another little cell. 201050: Climbing to 310 ft. 201230: King -0.072. 201427: In cloud. Updraft and downdraft ~5 m/s. On pass at 290 ft had updraft max. of ~10 m/s; T ~ -35 deg C. 202014: King -0.077. Another penetration. |w| ~ 3 m/s. Environmental temperature ~-40 deg C. Ending altitude was 330 ft. 202443: NPOL would like us to expedite. 202620: Identified another target. Trying to get there. 203447: At 290 ft. 204323: King ~ -0.097 before entering cloud. In cloud at 290 ft. |w| ~5 m/s. 204554: Climbing to 310 ft. 204923: Cloud is coming apart it seems. 205140: One more pass at 310 ft. Cloud has really topped out. Will finish pass and move to CRYSTAL objectives. 205336: N: DHP 295/065; O: 290/094. NPOL would like us to run this line. 205453: In cloud. Practically skimming top of cloud at 310 ft. 205556: Moving to CRYSTAL objective. 210728: N to O is an approach lane for Miami. NPOL is working on another plan. We've got struggles to find any viable targets (that we can get to). 211238: Heading to western site. Actually, they won't let us go there either. ~2120: DHP 255/055. ~2130: Headed towards this point but identified a potential target out over the water. Nothing much to work anywhere else (that we can reach). 213410: Skimming just over the top of our target. 213939: NPOL would like us to try DHP 300/090. We tried, and we can't get it. 214055: Dropped to 290 ft. Going to try to get this really thin stuff out over the Gulf. 214251: NPOL says RTB since we can't seem to get any airspace. 214403: Trying to get something before we RTB. 214804: We are trying to hit some cirrus right now on RTB. 215105: Got a few particles. Doing a downward spiral. 215420: Spiral done. We are RTB. 215945: Paul is collecting his most interesting data in the dust layer. 220733: Landing. 2.5 hours. Summary: 1. Traveled towards the western ground site and picked a target cloud for freezing processes studies. We climbed through this target at -24 deg C. We then intercepted the target at 290 ft (~-32 deg C), 310 ft (~-35 deg C), and 330 ft (~-40 deg C), at which point we essentially topped the storm. The storm was dissipating and was not growing to greater altitudes. So, we started looking for another target. 2. Picked another target Cb. We intercepted that Cb at 290 ft and 310 ft. At that point we topped that cloud, which was really weakening fast (and was not growing to greater altitudes), and expedited to do a CRYSTAL mission. 3. We were unable to get to any of the locations for the CRYSTAL mission. ATC was diverting traffic around the thunderstorm complex we wanted to study (the only game in town) and we couldn't get in. 4. Intercepted a rapidly decaying, thin cirrus over the Gulf of Mexico. Got very little out of it but we did get some particles. 5. Dipped into the dust as we returned to base. Very interesting data. Instrument Issues: All instruments appeared to be working well. Paul LeHardy changed the King probe element before the flight. He also cleaned the lenses on the 2DC before the flight.
