Citation Flight Notes July 23, 2002 Crew: Le Hardy, Sprosty, Askelson, Twohy, DeMott 185225: Takeoff ~1903: Plan is to travel to location D (DHP 266/063) and do passes from D to F and back (F: DHP 347/069). 191500: Compressor too warm...going to lose it. It's still running. 191740: cfdc compressor went down. ~1923: Reached D @31 kft, heading to G. ~1924: Compressor back up. 193125: Beginning turn. 193436: Completed turn and @33 kft. Still in clear air. Tiny little anvil over our heads. 193637: Few particles. 194113: Beginning turn. 194500 Completed turn. Still trying to get clearance for 35 kft. Climbing. 194637: At D, going to G @34 kft and climbing to 35 kft. 195453: Turning to go G to D. 195837: In cirrus @36 kft, coming up on G. ~1959: Plates and small aggregates. 200544: Beginning turn and trying for 37 kft. 201100: Made 37 kft. 201825: Beginning turn. 202144: @36 kft. Going G to D. 202240: Small particles. 202340: Plates, columns, and aggregates. 202920: Beginning turn for D to G. Staying at 36 kft for a run for Cindy. 203236: Got a little anvil form convective cell near D. 203436: Over D, heading to G. 203631: Particles for return run for Cindy. 203750: No counts on HVPS? Did get some speckles (small particles are present). 204214: Beginning turn to go G to D. 204522: Altered track to line up better with other planes. 205349: Turning for D to G. 205619: Turning through anvil of cell near D. Getting liquid water. Into convective cell a little. 205859: ATC will give us the 33-35 kft block about half way from D to G. 210324: Tops @39 kft. 210400: NPOL reports bases @32 kft. Going to shoot for that and then bounce up. 210738: Turning and dropping to 32 kft and will run back to D. 210800: NPOL reports that lidar sees anvil extending from 30-40 kft. 211810: Turning over D. 212400: At 30 kft. 212800: Looks like we are pretty close to the base of the anvil. 213200: Dropping to 29 kft. Will go to west site and try for a spiral up. 213408: Anvil has filled in over western ground site. Going to try to spiral at 750 ft/min. 213815: Paul is sampling at -37.3 C. 213914: Starting spiral up to 37 kft. 214200: CNs high. Stuck? Adjustment to flow rate needed? Came out of it. 214716: Pretty much out of anvil over western site at ~34 kft. 215306: 37 kft. 215704: Heading from west ground site to G. 220216: Climbing to 39 kft. ~2208: Very nice, uniform, 6-sided plates on last pass @39 kft. ~2217: Going to spiral down from 39 kft to 29 kft at 750 ft/min. 222227: Lost inverter 3. 222421: Inverter back. Starting downward spiral to 29 kft. Then, RTB. 223254: Some particles finally on downward spiral. 224030: Reset HVPS. Could have a stuck bit earlier in flight. 224228: Going to spiral down to 24 kft to drop through the bottom of the cloud. 224748: Cirrus we went through at this time about 3 miles NW of west ground station. 224400: RTB. 232229: Land. 4.5 hours. Summary: 1. Runs from D to G from 310 to 370. Only anvil was towards north end of line (towards G) extending sw from convection to ne. Steps at 310, 330, 350, 360, 370. 2. Runs from D to G from 370 to 290. Steps at 360, 360, 360, 350, 320, 300, 290 3. Spiraled over western ground site from 290 up to 370. In anvil most of the time. 4. Climbed to 390 and did a couple of passes (from western ground site to G and back). 5. Spiraled down to 240 from 390 over western ground site. Not a lot of the anvil left but some towards the bottom (from convection in the vicinity of D, I think). 6. Paul DeMott obtained data down to about -37 C. Happy with a couple of the last passes (during the downward spiral). Instrument Issues: Compressor cycled early (1917). Inverter 3 cycled at 2222. Stuck bit in HVPS (maybe around 2037). Cycled at 224030.
