Citation Flight Notes July 16, 2002 Crew: Le Hardy, Sprosty, Poellot, Twohy, DeMott 183744 Takeoff 184400 Plan is to spiral over West site. 185040 Proceeding to west site. Anvil ahead is orphaned. 185300 Shifting between wing and nose and back 185357 On pitot nose. 185800 NPOL requests drift with anvil while spiraling. On an ATC heading west. 190000 Finally cleared to west site. Level FL270. 190530 Anvil base visually at this level. 190700 Starting spiral up. TDL looks good today. Spirals not over site; a few miles southwest. 191045 Nothing on 2DC - resetting. 191400 Spiraling through 30,700'. Lagrangian spirals. 191750 Up through 32,300'. Climb rate is slow in the spiral. 192015 FL330, will spiral down. 192200 2DC is working. 192700 Near base. 193300 FL270, starting spiral climb to the right, where base is a little lower. 193350 Some light turbulence. 193440 HVPS hung bit - recycle. 193600 Light turbulence (had little on previous spiral). Only difference is we moved over a few miles. 193730 Plates, aggregates, small roundish. Aggregates are plates. 194700 FL335, new points: C DHP 302/025 D DHP 266/059 G 285/031 (10 miles short of C) 194900 FL338, about top of climb. Tops to 49K, most 42K (reported). 195344 FL345, max altitude 195530 Going to D at FL350. Asked by NPOL to offset to the south, closer to the storms. 200535 Photo of target cell, FL350. 200555 On line D to G 200700 Adjusting right of course to get closer to cell. 200900 Under anvil. 201100 Into some cloud, FL350, T = -45C. Thin and glassy particle images. 201250 Bullet rosettes? "Pretty crystals" 201500 Reversing course, into cloud. Will climb. 201838 Back along north side of cell, FL360. More beautiful crystals. 203630 4miles south of C, reverse and climb, just out of cloud/in the cloud. Lots of hexagonal crystals. 203515 Heading along anvil, heading 085. Will get to east end, then proceed to G then J, FL370. J 255/52 203740 Light turbulence, FL370, higher water contents. 203840 Switched to pitot wing - nose is plugging. 204100 Between cells momentarily, going direct G. 204730 Going to J. Wind 104/38 knots, FL370. Pitot nose plugged. 205730 At DHP 260/53 enroute to A, in cirrus, sort of reversed J-G. A 260/040 K 264/079 210140 A, turning to K, FL370. 210725 Turning 15 short of K, 5 short of L (drop point). 211345 Small particles and big aggregates of columns and plates and rope-like chain aggregates. 211530 Cloud thinned considerably at A. Turn and descend to FL250. 211850 A, FL353, heading 270. 212240 Turning to offset track 4 miles south, FL350. 2DC images have fingers from static. 212635 Reverse, descend to FL330. 213115 Near K, going to A, FL330, T= -40C 214040 Reversing, east end, descend to FL310. Out of cloud in turn. 214355 Heading west, FL310. 214500 Back in thicker cloud, light turbulence. Maybe some short columns. FL310, T -35C. 215205 Reverse, descend to FL290, at west end. 215330 Light turbulence. Pitot nose has been plugging off and on in cirrus. 220640 Out of cloud, FL290. 220750 Turning, descend to FL270. 221205 Heading 270, FL270, back into cloud. 221500 Cloud lower to left, thin on this track here, thicker west end. Will do FL250 next. Winds more northeasterly this level, 060/20 knots. 211940 West end, reversing, descend to FL250, still in cloud. 222325 FL250, heading east, still in cloud. 222720 Photo north of cell over Ft. Meyers. Continuing to finish legat FL250 in clear air, taking CFDC sample from CVI. 223450 End of leg, RTB. 223635 Speed brakes out. 225329 Land 4.2 hours. Summary: 1. Spirals near west site from FL270 up to FL330, down to FL270, up to FL345. Lagrangian spirals through small orphan anvil. 2. Flew offset from D to G at FL350, 360 and 370. Samples along north edge of anvil and decaying cell. 3. Two legs G to J, J to G, at FL370 in cirrus. 4. Flew A to K, then offset 4 miles south, in anvil. Steps at FL 370, 350, 330, 310, 290, 270, 250. Instrument Issues: No 2DC on first spiral up.
