Mission Scientist Report:

Quite successful 2 a/c mission (DC-8 cancelled shortly
before t/o due to inoperative copilot gyro). Target was a band of
convection oriented NNE-SSW which formed inland from the west coast and
moved toward the east at about 12 knots. Range from S-POL was initially
140 km but by end of mission was 80-100 km. Time of data collection for
both a/c was approx. 1945-2145 UTC. While much of the target was weakening
convection becoming stratiform, there was usually at least one strong cell
near the middle of the flight line, in which the Citation experienced
moderate turbulence and concussion from a nearby lightning strike.
The mission was cut abruptly short a few minutes before its natural ending by the threat posed by a rapidly developing, isolated thunderstorm to the safe landing of the ER-2. With some skillful guidance by the mobile pilot, a timely and safe landing was accomplished.
