One of the most complete TEFLUN aircraft datasets successfully obtained during the program thus far. The principal weather system targeted was a zone of convection about 50 nm wide, oriented NE-SW, which advanced from SE to NW during the day. Coordinated flight lines executed offshore for almost 2 hours, from 2000-2155 UTC. While much of the target was stratiform, there were some embedded convective cells. During the 2nd hour the Citation did a spiral through the melting layer. This mission was conducted entirely within 80 km of S-POL, and much of it at 40-60 km range, within the dual-Doppler lobe formed by S-POL and the Melbourne WSR-88D.
The start of the mission was delayed for about 90 minutes by a thunderstorm in the targeted band approaching PAFB which forced the DC-8 to shut down power and get people off the aircraft. All 3 aircraft were delayed, but fortunately the weather, although weaker, stayed within range. Due to vigorous convection over land, the planned LASE-MACAWS run across the state was only partially accomplished at the beginning of the mission, but was done at the end at FL 190. Also at the end of the mission, the ER-2 was directed to a strong thunderstorm about 90 nm NW of S-POL and obtained good data on its solo overflight. (85 GHz Tb <80=B0K).

Started with 3 penetrations of convective towers. Then worked 2 lines (numbers 1 & 3) in stratiform precipitation at +5, +1, -2, and -5 C. Followed with 3 spirals, down, up and down, around mid-point of line 3. Good stratiform mission!
HVPS down for much of flight, no data in rain. CPI down for much of flight also.
Replace lens and O-ring in HVPS. Examine CPI for moisture.
